Reddit Market Fit is how I got one of my Reddit posts to hit 8.6M views.

But, today’s not about me or these millions of impressions I got.

Instead, it’s about why you should always find your ‘Reddit Market Fit’, first (and, always) before you even start thinking about what posts to make or how many impressions you want.

(If you can’t tell, I’m really trying hard to coin this term, btw.)

Anyway, before we jump into how to find your Reddit Market Fit, let’s talk about what it is:

What is Reddit Market Fit?

Reddit Market Fit — just like Product Market Fit — tells the world that you’ve found exactly where your posts belong in the Reddit universe.

I was able to achieve almost 9M impressions because I knew where the content belonged on Reddit.

(In some cases, you may already have the content in mind. In other situations, you’ll write the content after finding RMF. I recommend the latter, but it depends on your business’ goals. Either way, finding your RMF is vital.)

When I made my post on r/geography or r/memes, I knew these subreddits were already a Reddit Market Fit. (Yes, even though I got banned temporarily for it.)

Here’s an analogy:

Just because you know where India is on a map, it doesn’t mean you know India.

If I were hiring a tour guide, I’d prefer to hire someone who has actually been there (or, is from there), understands the people and the culture, knows where the delicious food options are, and can point me to all the cool non-touristy spots I wouldn’t find on ChatGPT.

I fucking love Indian Food!!!!

(Trust me…I’ve been to India and if this imaginary tour guide didn’t know about Pidakala War, then I don’t really want to chat with them. Actually, no meme required, just Google it).

That’s how Reddit works, too.

You can’t ‘know’ a subreddit just from a quick glance.

You have to know how the users in that subreddit think, what they laugh at, what triggers them, what makes them curious, etc.

This is Reddit Market Fit.

How You Can Find Your Reddit Market Fit

The ‘Cool Kids’ table

Most people think I just magically know which subreddits to post in. I don’t. I learned them the long way—by digging, exploring, and spending way too many hours inside these communities until I understood how they think.

That work paid off.

One of my posts hit 8.6 million views, and that single post became my roadmap for finding Reddit Market Fit over and over again—across totally different topics, formats, and niches.

It’s the same process I use in r/latestagecapitalism, r/Entrepreneur, r/digitalnomad, and dozens of other subs.

And now you can use it, too.

Here’s how to find your Reddit Market Fit.

1. Know where your audience is

Before you promote yourself, you need to know where your audience is hanging out.

Pretend you’re them.

For example, I’ve worked for beauty brands (can’t disclose too much — signed an NDA), and although I didn’t know much about makeup in general, I did know how to find this brand’s RMF.

So, how can you find them?

Use the search bar: Search your brand name or your competitors', or the industry and/or subtopic related to your brand. Then, you’ll quickly be able to identify the associated subreddits.

I’d spend about two hours going down this subreddit rabbit hole.

As you do this, either need to retain current customers or attract new ones. Essentially, you should always be thinking, “Are my users already here or could they be here?”

If the subreddit doesn’t fit this, then move on (but, keep it on the back-burner. It came up after doing a search for a reason).

Now what?

2. Identify the posts that are doing well within those subreddits

You know the table where the popular kids hang out?

You’ve discovered where they tend to loiter in the cafeteria.

But, what are they talking about today?

While,I don’t recommend you stalk out the popular kids, you can do what I do:

Pro-tip: Follow the 1% of posters in that subreddit, or really any subreddit.

Now, go into these subreddits you’ve identified (you can bookmark them and save relevant posts, which we’ll get to in a sec) and find the most popular posts.

To do this, I go to the top of the subreddit where the ‘Sort By’ toggles are. I select ‘Top’ and ‘This Month’.

see the top left corner

So, are these top-posters in the last month using images?

Are they using titles that spark conversation?

Are they using open-ended questions or are they making bold statements?

(AI can help you analyze these posts. Maybe I’ll make a tool for this later…)

Most importantly, do you think that you could replicate this content in order to stand out in this subreddit, ultimately driving traffic to your brand?

Spend some time with these posts to get to know them. Essentially, linger over by the popular kids without them necessarily knowing you’re onto them.

This simple strategy is basically a cheat-sheet of what does well in this subreddit, which will come in super handy when it comes time to create your own post.

This tells you exactly what ‘language' you need to speaking if you want to FIT inside of these subreddits. (Kind of how like when I have to find my ‘corporate voice’)

Basically, you’re copying what works. And, we’ll get to this in the next post: after you’ve found your RMF, how you can make sure your post also has the potential to rank.

And, that’s it.

Once you feel you have five good subreddits and you’ve understood at least three strong posts within those subreddits, you’ll have a good sense of what works and a foundation for starting out your Reddit content strategy.

And, the more you practice these steps, the quicker it will become.

Just keep working this muscle, and you’ll be a pro at it.

Don’t Post Until You’ve Found Your Reddit Market Fit

Before I even start posting for a brand, I spend a couple of hours doing this Reddit Market Fit research. You can make the most viral-worthy post in the world, but if it’s not where your audience is and it doesn’t fit the vibe of that subreddit, it won’t matter.

My post didn’t get almost 9M views just because it was a good post.

I had to first make sure it belonged where it did.

I found the right subreddit. I knew what posts did well.

I found my RFM.

Bonus: The post that generated 8.6M views…

Let’s do a quick recap.

Here’s how I found RMF with this post.

First, I used the search bar to find subreddits related to my brand, product, or the topic I wanted to discuss.

Next, I found the posts that did the best within these subreddits.

Voila!

Of course, I had to then replicate this style in order for my post to rank well.

(Subscribe to find out next week as we dive into creating the perfect post within your Reddit Market Fit).

Peace.
